What is Lupus?

Symptoms
Since no two people experience the same batch of symptoms and signs of lupus, there are a variety of mild or severe indications of the disease. Some people may experience their symptoms rather quickly, while others face a slow progression. Symptoms are also temporary or permanent, depending on the kind of lupus involved. Even when it comes to the characteristic rash associated with lupus – not everyone will endure this telling symptom. The most common signs and symptoms of lupus include:

a) Malar Rash:
About 1 in 3 people with lupus will develop a butterfly-shaped rash that appears across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. The rash may look raised or flat, blotchy or solid red in certain sections of the face. Skin lesions that look like small pimples may also arise.
b) Kidney Problems:
Kidney damage is a common symptom associated with lupus patients. They may eventually lose the full ability to filter toxins, which can lead to kidney failure. Patients sometimes notice urine that is frothy or tea-colored. The lower legs and ankles may swell.
c) Arthritis:
Joint pain is commonly seen in lupus patients, which is often accompanied by swelling and stiffness. The fingers, wrists, knees, and hands are the most common parts of the body to suffer arthritic attacks. During a lupus flare, the pain can become quite intense.
d) Photosensitivity:

e) Affected Brain or Central Nervous System:
The brain and central nervous system may become affected by lupus, where a patient may suffer from headaches, seizures, and dizziness. Vision problems are also a possibility, as well as the threat of stroke.
f) Heart Problems:
All parts of the heart are in danger when an individual is diagnosed with lupus. Patients should pay close attention to the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart), myocardium (the heart muscle), and endocardium (the lining of the inside of the heart).
g) Lung Problems:

Lupus patients may also suffer from the following symptoms and signs: fatigue, fever, swollen glands, body swelling (in the legs and around the eyes), digestive problems, stomach pains, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, depression, and hair loss.
Causes of Lupus
Doctors are unclear as to how an autoimmune disease like lupus strikes in the first place. While various theories, such as environment, hormones, and heredity are some of the instances thought to contribute to the development of the condition, there are certain factors also thought to trigger lupus.
These factors include viral or bacterial infections, certain prescription medications, excessive exposure to sunlight, and estrogen. Additional theories for the cause of lupus in some patients include stress, various food items, aspartame (artificial sweetener), silicone breast implants, mercury dental fillings, hair dye, and toxic chemicals [2].
Diagnosis
There is no one test that diagnoses lupus. For some, it could take months or years for a doctor to conclude that you are suffering from the disease. Risk Factors
Anyone can develop lupus, but the disease predominately strikes females. The condition is also seen more within the African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American communities. This article is long but very informative. We all think eating fruits means just popping it into our mouths. It’s not as easy as you think. It’s important to know how and when to eat. What is the correct way of eating fruits? It means not eating fruits after your meals! Fruits should be eaten on an EMPTY stomach.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with great energy for weight loss and other activities.

Fruit is the most important food. Let’s say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach in to the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil…

Are you concerned about the safety of meat?

Food safety expert Dr. Jeffrey Bender says mildly, "ground beef is not a completely safe product." The understatement is not lost on The New York Times, whose hugely popular, endlessly retweeted and emailed article on ground beef safety Sunday points out the "restrained" enforcement of safety procedures by the USDA.

The article tells the story of children's dance instructor Stephanie Smith, who was paralyzed after eating tainted beef at a Sunday dinner with her family in September 2007. Smith, 22, was taken to the hospital five days after the family dinner, "in excruciating pain" that a doctor described as worse than childbirth. (Smith wouldn't know; she hadn't yet started a family of her own.)

Smith was having so many seizures that doctors had to put her in a coma and fly her to the Mayo Clinic, where her mother worried she wouldn't live out the year. Scientists ended up tying 11 cases in Minnesota to hamburgers manufactured by Cargill and marketed as American Chef's Selection Angus Beef Patties. Four of the 11 sickened developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition which can affect kidney function. In the worst cases, the colon wall is penetrated, impacting blood vessels and causing clots that can lead to seizures. This is what happened to Smith, and her coma lasted nine weeks. When she woke up, she couldn't walk. Her doctors say she'll probably never walk again.



After the E. coli outbreak that sickened Smith, the USDA did spot checks at 224 plants, only to discover that nearly a quarter of them had "serious safety problems" -- they weren't even following the safety plans the plants themselves devised. The USDA allows this, as well as allowing grinders to decide whether they want to test for harmful bacteria before or after grinding beef; beef suppliers prefer having the meat tested after it's ground and combined with other companies' beef, since it keeps their exposure to recalls low.

The reaction of consumers reading the article has not been mild. Among my friends and social media contacts, those who read the long and sordid tale of the lax food safety bureaucracy and the tangled weave of questionable meat that goes into our hamburgers swore off the stuff for good. Those of us who've long chosen only meat from very small, sustainably-managed ranchers are wiping our brows in relief.

Pharmaceuticals And Your Longevity

A long life is usually a drug-free life. Pharmaceuticals may not be conducive to your longevity health.

Most recently, three of the top executives of Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to criminal charges of misleading the public on the risk of addiction and abuse associated with the painkiller drug OxyContin. That was yet another scandal of pharmaceutical companies doctoring research findings of the safety of drugs and masking their undesirable side effects.

Are you surprised? I am not. For decades, unreliable drug tests have abounded in the medical and pharmaceutical research community.

It is rather common for pharmaceutical companies to "influence" researchers through coercion, incentive, and even threat, to produce the desired results in clinical trials. Fabricating data, such as in the case of OxyContin, is no surprise to the industry.

Clinical trials, usually involving a small number of people, may not truly reflect the outcome of those who will ultimately be using those drugs after their approval.

Drugs tested on animal models may be biased and even irrelevant. An artificially induced disease in non-human animal models may yield results incompatible to a spontaneous, naturally occurring human disease. In short, there is no absolute safety or reliability of pharmaceutical drugs. If you wish to live a long life, your life should be drug-free as much as possible. Taking pharmaceuticals too many and too frequently means that your body is already stressed by physical ailments ' and that is not a healthy sign. Ironically, these drugs may do a further disservice by infusing more toxins into an already toxic body. Remember, all pharmaceuticals are chemicals, and therefore are acidic and toxic by nature. However, it does not imply that you must desist from taking your medications prescribed by your doctor. Rather, it suggests that you should be more alert to the side effects of the drugs you are currently taking, and that you should not readily reach out for pharmaceutical drugs without second thoughts as if they were coupons or gift certificates.

More importantly, you should be more aware of your body's own self-healing power. Your body is very forgiving. Even after years of abuse, your body is still capable of recovering from any disease, only if you would give it the opportunity.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, once said: "Healing is a matter of time, but it is also a matter of opportunity." Give your body that opportunity to heal by itself, instead of using a pharmaceutical drug aimed at removing symptoms right away, thereby interfering with the self-healing mechanism in your body.

Western medicine does not take into consideration the basic concept that your body is designed to regulate and repair itself, and therefore does not address self-healing, which is always made in deference to more invasive procedures, such as administering a drug.

When you give your body a drug that replaces a substance your body is capable of making itself, you body then becomes weaker, not stronger, and begins not only to manufacture less of that substance, but also to become more dependent on the outside source, which is usually the drug.

Unfortunately, no drug can give you insight into the circumstance that created your problems. At best, it can only temporarily assuage the physical pain created by your situation. A drug "cures" your symptoms at the expense of creating more potential symptoms down the road. For a while, you may be symptom-free, but soon enough new symptoms may emerge, requiring yet a more potent drug to deal with them. So stop ingesting your body with drugs, flu shots, vaccinations, and other antibiotics, which are toxic by nature.

Are flu shots safe?

In a February 2005 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases compared flu-related mortality among older people to rates of immunization. Their finding was surprising: during the past quarter century, immunization rates for the elderly have climbed substantially while the elderly flu-related mortality rate has stayed the same. In other words, the authorities have "overstated" the benefits of flu shots on the elderly population.

Are vaccines safe?

Vaccines contain killed or less-virulent viruses, bacteria and chemical extracts to stimulate your immune reaction against these organisms. Because more and more reports have cited vaccine failure, manufacturers have made vaccines more potent. The problem with this approach is that in the very young, the nutritionally deficient, and the aged, over-stimulating the immune system may have an opposite effect: it can "paralyze" the immune system. In addition, the brain may also become over-stimulated into producing free radicals in an effort to kill these make-believe invading organisms. You may have been indoctrinated with the concept of taking medications for prevention and treatment, instead of relying on your own immunity. The medical profession is forever promoting the positive attributes of flu shots and vaccinations, leaving the unaware patients no other option except to succumb to the pressure as long as their health care providers are willing to pay.

A case in point: According to Health Day News, June 29, 2006, a U.S. advisory panel recommended that 11- and 12-year-old girls be routinely vaccinated against the virus that may cause cervical cancer. Also, most recently, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also recommended that the vaccine, called Gardasil, be administered to girls as young as nine, at the health provider's discretion, and for women up to age 26, who have not previously been vaccinated against the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV). These enthusiastic recommendations were hailed as "a breakthrough for women's health." You just wonder!

My point is: Don't take pharmaceuticals unless you absolutely have to, and they are no miracle cures for your ailments! Let your body heal itself. Pharmaceuticals may shorten, instead of prolonging, your life.

Caffeine has been shown to have similar fatigue-busting, stamina-boosting to athletic enhancers on the market, except that it boosts the performance of the body in all areas – not simply specific ones. Those subjects who drank a cup or two of coffee regularly performed better in athletic tests, and were able to sustain energy levels for longer periods of time. It seems that caffeine emits special signals to the body, telling it to ignore the usual effects of mild fatigue. This helps energy to keep up longer and improve stamina. Most surprising, however, was that a startling revelation in relation to Parkinson’s disease was discovered. Several tests performed provided the same result – people who regularly consumed coffee had a severely lowered risk of developing the disease. Some people were up to 80% less likely than those who don’t drink coffee.

The views of coffee are rapidly changing in the health community. Once feared for its lack of detailed research and high levels of caffeine, people are now starting to look at coffee as a mild form of health drink. One thing everyone knows is that it’s a definite boost in the morning, and man people just can’t seem to get along without it. This is exactly why these reports are so astounding and important – coffee is used so regularly by so many people that its effects on the body need to be understood as much as possible. With over 1,200 pairs of twins enrolled in the study, researchers were able to determine the impact of exercise on the telomere length of white blood cells. Working up a sweat seems to be important. People who exercised vigorously at least 3 hours each week had longer telomeres and were 9 years younger than couch potatoes who did no exercise. This holds true after removing other factors like smoking, age, weight and activity level at work.

Researchers believe that shortened telomeres can increase the risk of age-related diseases like high blood pressure, mental difficulties, cancer and more. Anti-Aging Supplements: Do They Work?

The amount of recent information about anti-aging supplements is staggering. Suddenly, everywhere you look there is a new way to turn back the clock and preserve your young skin. Previous products being offered usually came from a lab and included ingredients that you could hardly pronounce let alone relate to. Now, not only are there topical solutions to aging being offered, but there is also relief in the form of vitamin and mineral supplement. It is being strongly suggested that you drink, eat, and topically treat yourself to a more youthful appearance.

A great number of exciting discoveries have been made with regard to how we age, and how we can best prevent it from appearing in our skin. Obviously, we cannot stop the aging process, but we can certainly slow it down and prevent it from making such a marked difference in our appearance. One of the best and most critical ways to do this is to protect ourselves from the sun, which is the ultimate aging factor for most people, especially if you are fair-skinned. Stem cells free diabetics from insulin treatment

A controversial stem cell treatment tested in Brazil has freed patients with type-1 diabetes from dependence on insulin. Since the treatment some patients have been able to stop from injecting the drug for years.
"It's the first time treatment has made patients insulin-free, although I never say it's a cure," says the co-leader of the team, Richard Burt of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
"Some patients relapsed and had to go back to using insulin, but even if they did, they didn't require as much as they did before the treatment."
The treatment is designed to stop the immune systems of patients with type-1 diabetes from mistakenly destroying the pancreatic islet cells which manufacture insulin, the hormone that keeps blood sugar levels in check.
Spectacular preliminary results from the trial in 2007 were dismissed by some critics who claimed the outcomes may have been down to immunosuppressive drugs used in the treatment regime, or simply due to better care of the patients because they were in a clinical trial.
Islet recovery
But the latest results, which include updates on the original 15 patients and data from a further eight, suggest the treatment may indeed work as proposed. Demonstrating that most patients had elevated blood concentrations of C-peptide, a breakdown product of insulin production, Burt says is a clear sign that the patients were making insulin themselves.
"The remaining islets are not being attacked, and there's evidence of a recovery in the islet cells [which produce insulin]," says Burt. In some patients, the levels of C-peptide trebled, reaching a peak about two to three years after treatment compared with beforehand.
Developed mainly by Burt's colleague Júlio Voltarelli of the Regional Blood Center in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, the treatment relies on extracting and storing CD34 stem cells from the blood of patients. These stem cells can grow into all white blood cells of the immune system.
In the next step, patients receive drugs that destroy what remains of their immune systems, obliterating at the same time the components of the immune system that attack the islets.
Finally, the saved stems are returned to the patient so that they can regenerate afresh an immune system that will no longer attack islet cells.
Insulin sufficiency
The latest results appear to show that in the 20 patients benefiting from the treatment, their blood contained elevated levels of C-peptide, proving that the patients were making insulin themselves.
Twelve of the 20 remain insulin-free, one for five years, four for three years, three for two years and another for one year. Levels of C-peptide typically peaked about 2 years after treatment, trebling in concentration compared to beforehand. "The remaining islets are not being attacked," says Burt.
Even the eight who relapsed have been on lower doses of insulin than beforehand, and still have higher levels of C-peptide, suggesting that their islet cells have benefitted from the treatment. Two became insulin-independent again after receiving the sugar-lowering drug, sitagliptin.
But the treatment didn't work in three patients, and nine men later suffered from low sperm counts. Another two suffered from pneumonia. None of the patients died.
Follow-up trial
Burt says that a larger trial is now planned to take place both in Brazil and in the US. This time, it will randomised so that some of the patients receive placebo.
As with the existing trial, newly-diagnosed patients will be selected. They still have most of their islet cells, and so stand to benefit more than patients whose islet cells have been destroyed.
Burt also said that the treatment is unlikely to benefit type-2 diabetics as they still make insulin anyway. Their diabetes results because the rest of the cells in their body stop responding to insulin as they should.
But a similar procedure developed by Burt has already shown some success in another autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis. Results published in January showed that many patients benefited, again, through reprogramming of their immune systems, this time to stop it from attacking nerve and brain cells.
Other researchers remain unconvinced. "It would be wrong to unnecessarily raise the hopes of people living with diabetes about a new treatment for the condition on the back of the evidence provided in this study," says Iain Frame, director of research at the health charity, Diabetes UK.
Frame welcomed the plans to include a control group in the next, expanded phase of the programme, and urged further research by the investigators to be sure that the treatment itself is causing the improvements.
